An Explanation of Two Issues Some Members Are Unhappy About at KangAi Commune

Zhang Mading1 min read

1. The Review Deposit

KangAi Commune operates on post-event cost-sharing with zero prepayment, which creates a problem: the cost of fraudulent and speculative applications is extremely low, and large numbers of people who do not qualify will come and try their luck — passing means a large sum of money, and failing costs nothing. If this is not checked, the platform will eventually be swamped and no one's interests will be protected.

The review deposit exists to solve this problem: to raise the threshold for fraud and speculation so that every applicant thinks carefully.

Moreover, the money is refundable, as long as the applicant was honest and committed no fraud or concealment.

2. Not Meeting the Mutual Aid Standard

A few individuals who fell just short of the mutual aid standard have called the Commune a swindler. There is no basis for this. The covenant is agreed in advance; we are merely abiding by it. Suppose we agree that a blood pressure of 140 meets the standard and 139 does not — if we changed the established rules at will, the agreement would lose its meaning and the Commune would have no credibility left.

Only by abiding by the established rules are we being responsible to all members. We cannot fail to be responsible to everyone else in order to satisfy one or two people; that really would make us swindlers.
