Concerns About the Commune's Expansion, and Why We Need to Restrain the Impulse to Expand

Zhang Mading1 min read

Some members have expressed dissatisfaction on the forum and by phone: why not expand publicity, attract more people, and make each person's contribution smaller?

First, more people will not make contributions smaller. Here is the explanation.

Second, our main concerns are as follows:

1. If the rules are not sound enough, the faster you expand, the faster you die. When there are many people, adjusting the rules becomes harder. A characteristic of the Commune's business is that problems take a long time to erupt, so the rules need to be polished.

2. The corresponding supporting infrastructure in China is lacking. If the number of people grows too fast, review will inevitably fail to keep up, inevitably bringing a large number of errors. The number of patients is proportional to the size of the membership; when there are 100 cases a month, it may become difficult for member oversight to play a role. So supporting capacity must keep up.

3. We need to maintain low costs and take a sustainable path. The internet likes explosive growth and bold strokes, but we believe this does not apply to mutual aid platforms. For a mutual aid platform, sustainability is true responsibility. Unlike an ordinary project, it cannot be shut down and restarted if done poorly.

So I think the Commune's current pace of development is appropriate. A Century Commune is no simple matter.
