Why Can't KangAi Commune Refund Members Their Past Contributions?
Members whose aid applications are rejected filing complaints and reports has long been a thorny problem in mutual aid platform operations. Some members have suggested refunding the historical contributions of such members whose applications failed review, as a way to defuse the conflict, noting that it involves few people and a relatively limited financial cost. In reality, however, refunding rejected members would expose the mutual aid platform to devastating operational risk.
Imagine someone who never met the conditions for joining speculatively entering a mutual aid platform, dutifully making their routine contributions, and later having their application rejected because they do not qualify — and the platform then fully refunding all their past contributions. For such a person, there would be virtually no economic loss throughout, yet a chance to win a large mutual aid payout.
Once a refund precedent is set, it will inevitably breed a mass of speculative joining: large numbers of people who do not qualify for coverage would crowd in with a gambler's hope and try to claim mutual aid funds. Some of them would surely slip through review and succeed in obtaining aid. This would directly increase the cost-sharing burden on compliant members, and the per-capita cost of contributions would keep rising. Over time, the rule-abiding ordinary members, unable to bear the burden, would opt out, while the speculative crowd keeps pouring in, forming a vicious cycle in which bad money drives out good and ultimately causing the entire mutual aid system to collapse and become unsustainable.
For this reason, a mutual aid platform must hold a core bottom line: absent a fault of the platform's own, it must never refund contributions to members whose aid applications have been rejected. This is the fundamental precondition for the platform's compliant and sound operation. Only by holding this red line can the platform to some degree resist the chaos of speculation and keep the mutual aid ecosystem from being thoroughly drained.
