Human History Is the History of the Journey from 'Cave Mutual Aid' to 'Online Mutual Aid'

The history of human development is essentially a history of the ceaseless evolution of mutual aid — from small groups huddling together in primeval caves all the way to the networked mutual aid that covers hundreds of millions under today's internet. What changes is the form of connection; what does not change is the core of people supporting one another.

Hundreds of thousands of years ago, humans still crowded into dark caves, their survival resting entirely on small-scale, tight-knit mutual aid: the able-bodied hunted together, the old and weak shared the fruits, and the sick and injured cared for one another. This point-to-point aid bound by blood and locality helped fragile humanity gain a foothold in a harsh natural world and accumulate the confidence that would seed civilization.

In the millennia that followed, the boundaries of mutual aid slowly expanded, yet it never escaped the limits of geography and social circle: neighborly relief and guild assistance were mostly small-scale, linear connections, and most people's support came from only a handful of those around them. A single accident could pierce an ordinary person's line of defense, and goodwill from a thousand miles away had little chance of arriving in time.

The internet changed all of this completely, reconstructing mutual aid as a complex, interlacing network: countless strangers, transcending blood ties and geography, weave a web of mutual aid that spans the globe. Patients with severe illness quickly receive donations from all corners; farmers stuck with unsold fruit can move their inventory with the help of netizens; ordinary developers freely share the industry's top technical resources; and when disaster strikes, the goodwill of millions of nodes quickly converges into a flood of relief.

In this web, everyone is both a recipient of help and a potential giver. Mutual aid costs less and reaches wider, and it holds up a supporting force for every ordinary person. From the faint light of the cave to the river of stars woven by the network, humanity has traveled hundreds of thousands of years — from banding together to survive to helping everyone live better. This ever-expanding web of mutual aid keeps carrying civilization forward.

(In this article, 'online mutual aid' refers to the broad concept, not merely to a specific form such as platform-based critical-illness mutual aid.)
