Online Mutual Aid Is a New Business Form Born of Technology, Not a Temporary Product

Some people regard online mutual aid as a transitional product for a time when the social security system is incomplete, a temporary choice that merely fills a gap in a certain period and will eventually disappear. In fact, we believe online mutual aid is by nature neither a temporary product nor a transitional substitute, but an indispensable long-term component of a multi-tiered livelihood protection system.

First, social security is inclusive and basic in character: it can provide basic living protection for the public, but it cannot cover every risk people face. Its coverage, reimbursement ratios, and payout limits are all governed by explicit rules, and for extreme risks such as critical illness and high medical costs, basic social security offers very limited protection and struggles to fully absorb the shocks families face. This leaves a space of genuine need for online mutual aid to exist over the long term.

Second, although mainstream commercial insurance offers stronger protection and a richer variety of products, it has shortcomings of its own. Commercial insurance is profit-driven at its core; premiums are relatively high, the process is opaque, and the public has almost no sense of participation. Low-income groups and workers in non-standard occupations find it hard to match with suitable commercial insurance products, yet the protection needs of these groups are long-term and widespread.

Third, online mutual aid has unique core advantages. Unlike the fixed formats of social security or the market-driven profit orientation of commercial insurance, online mutual aid rests on the underlying logic of people helping one another and carries the warmth of human connection, breaking the pattern in which traditional protection models keep people isolated from one another. At the same time, its flow of funds, mutual aid rules, and payout cases are open and transparent throughout, avoiding the pain point of opaque information in traditional protection: participants can clearly know the purpose of every sum and their own protection rights, feel directly the care and help extended to others, and enjoy a stronger sense of participation.

Finally, online mutual aid is not simply a supplementary protection tool, but an innovative improvement of the livelihood protection model built on internet technology. With big data and digital internet technology, online mutual aid has made participation, verification and review, fund flows, and claims disclosure fully online and transparent, greatly lowering the protection threshold and operating costs while raising the efficiency of protection services and public participation.

Looking back at the various forms of protection before the birth of the internet, they were long limited by blocked information, high connection costs, and narrow service reach; traditional protection models became rigid over time and could hardly break through their inherent limits or adapt to diverse livelihood needs. The internet's low-cost, wide-coverage, highly interconnected technology has driven every industry to renew its business forms and upgrade its models, and the livelihood protection field is no exception. Online mutual aid is precisely the inevitable evolutionary product of the protection industry adapting to the digital age, a brand-new business form born of technological empowerment rather than a temporary substitute filling a blank — which further confirms its core value of long-term existence and sustained development.
