There Is Only One Ultimate Purpose in Subdividing the Mutual-Aid Communes: to Ensure Fairness as Far as Possible
Fairness is the cornerstone of KangAi Commune. If it is not fair, it may be explained away by compassion in the short term, but it cannot be sustained in the long term.
So fairness means that what each person in a commune puts in and gets out should roughly match — no favoring one over another — so that everyone can stay.
Subdividing the mutual-aid communes according to certain criteria is meant to ensure fairness.
For example, after the old commune was split, many people realized they did not need "maternal and infant mutual aid," and some complained that the Commune forced them to join a commune they did not need — but that had in fact been one of the rights bundled into the former catch-all commune, only the assistance had not yet been triggered. Imagine how much stronger the sense of unfairness would have been if members had raised this question after many rounds of deductions.
Now members can join the mutual aid they need, and for any mutual aid that does not benefit them, they can choose to withdraw. This allows the Commune to run healthily on a foundation of fairness.
As for some members' feedback that this makes mutual aid complicated, hard to understand and hard to promote: my view is that mutual aid was never a simple matter. Perhaps this will also hold long-term, positive significance for awakening members to the issue, and time will let more people understand us.
