Covering Every Major Illness, with Full-Year Contributions Under 7 Yuan: the Commune's Cost-Sharing Really Isn't High

Zhang Mading2 min read

If you join KangAi Commune's Million Medical Insurance Supplementary Mutual Aid Society (which can fund any illness involving high costs), your contributions for the whole of 2019 would not exceed 7 yuan. Not much, is it?

You'll say: that's a lie—I've clearly paid out dozens or even hundreds of yuan at KangAi Commune.

That's because you hold membership in several societies with different mutual aid benefits at the same time, or you manage the accounts of many people on their behalf.

Why is the contribution for the Million Medical Insurance Supplementary Mutual Aid Society low, while that for the KangAi Critical-Illness Mutual Aid Society and the Anti-Cancer Mutual Aid Society is high? Because for the critical-illness and anti-cancer societies, a confirmed diagnosis means a fixed sum of money no matter how much you actually spent, and societies of this kind carry higher contributions. The Million Medical Insurance Supplementary Mutual Aid Society, by contrast, is reimbursement-based; each recipient receives less aid on average, so contributions are naturally very low.

As for the Elderly Mutual Aid Society: on the one hand, the incidence of illness among the elderly is high; on the other hand, the Commune's elderly society also pays a fixed sum on diagnosis regardless of actual spending. Together these factors mathematically determine that contributions to the elderly society are high. If the elderly society were also reimbursement-based, its contributions would certainly be far, far lower.

Quite a few mutual aid platforms secretly change their rules, turning the "fixed sum on diagnosis" approach into reimbursement-based aid—in effect quietly reducing your rights without you even realizing it!

Moreover, at the Commune, joining several societies gives you several chances to receive aid, as long as you meet the standard of each society. That is a tremendous advantage. Of course, the corresponding contributions are higher.

That said, you shouldn't join too many societies—act within your means. If you don't want to spend too much, then simply keep only the medical insurance supplementary society.

In short, blaming the Commune for high contributions makes no sense. Your rights are right there in front of you—reducing your benefits will certainly reduce your contributions!
