If Failed Mutual Aid Applications Could Refund Past Contributions, the Consequences Would Be Terrifying
Most of the negative voices about the Commune come from members whose applications were rejected. Some members suggest that if a mutual aid application is unsuccessful, the Commune should refund the contributions they paid in the past. This would resolve these people's scolding and complaints about the Commune and would be beneficial to the Commune's development.
We believe that if this were done, it would bring extremely terrifying consequences to the platform.
Just imagine: if this were done, it would mean that anyone could apply for mutual aid at no cost. People who do not meet the membership conditions and malicious fraudsters would join the Commune in large numbers to try their luck. If they pass the review, they get a large sum of money; and if they don't, it doesn't matter, because they can get back their earlier contributions anyway.
In that case, the platform would become a paradise for speculators and fraudsters, honest and rule-abiding members would suffer losses, and the mutual aid platform would be unable to sustain itself over the long term.
So this absolutely must not be done; on the contrary, we must find ways to raise the cost of speculation and fraud.
In operating KangAi Commune, we have made some compromises and given refunds in certain situations (currently six situations are specified). But these must be exceptional cases; otherwise, as described above, the consequences are terrifying.
