I've Bought a Million-Yuan or Six-Million-Yuan Medical Insurance Policy—Do I Still Need to Join KangAi Commune?

Medical insurance and critical-illness insurance are two different concepts.

Medical insurance generally reimburses medical expenses beyond what public health insurance covers, and will not exceed the medical expenses remaining after public health insurance reimbursement.

Critical-illness insurance pays upon diagnosis: as long as a certain type of serious illness is clearly diagnosed, it pays a lump sum regardless of the actual cost.

Currently, the market has one-million and six-million medical insurance policies, priced at a few hundred yuan. They certainly have their use, but 1 million or 6 million is more of a gimmick, because the out-of-pocket portion of actual treatment expenses rarely reaches 1 million or 6 million.

Critical-illness insurance, by contrast, is very expensive even for a coverage of only 100,000 or 200,000 yuan. A cancer policy with 300,000 yuan of coverage cannot be bought for less than a thousand yuan a year. Whole-life critical-illness insurance is even more expensive—by more than a little.

So each has its pros and cons; combining them may give more comprehensive protection.
